Car Air Con Regas: When You Need It, Costs, and DIY Tips

Summary

  • Every 2 years: Air con systems lose about 10% of refrigerant each year. Regas every 2 years to stay cool.
  • Typical cost: £40–£80 at most garages. Dealer prices are higher at £80–£150.
  • Signs you need it: Weak airflow, warm air, or a musty smell when you turn it on.

Your car's air conditioning doesn't just keep you cool in summer. It also demists your windscreen in winter. When it stops working properly, it's usually because the refrigerant gas has leaked out.

This guide explains everything you need to know about air con regassing.

What Is an Air Con Regas?

Regassing means refilling the refrigerant gas that makes your air conditioning cold.

  • Air con systems are sealed, but they still lose gas slowly through tiny seals and joints.
  • Most cars lose about 10–15% of their refrigerant each year.
  • After 2–3 years, there isn't enough gas left to cool the air properly.
  • A regas removes the old gas, checks for leaks, and refills with fresh refrigerant.

Signs Your Air Con Needs Regassing

Watch for these warning signs.

  • Air isn't cold enough: The most obvious sign. If it's blowing warm or lukewarm air, the gas is probably low.
  • Takes ages to cool down: If it used to cool quickly but now takes forever, the gas is running out.
  • Musty smell: This can mean bacteria have built up in the system. A regas usually includes an antibacterial treatment.
  • Windscreen doesn't demist: Air con removes moisture from the air. If it's not working, demisting takes much longer.

How Much Does It Cost?

Provider Typical Cost Includes
National chains (Kwik Fit, Halfords) £40–£70 Regas + leak check
Independent garages £50–£80 Regas + leak check + antibac treatment
Main dealers £80–£150 Regas + full system check
Mobile service £60–£90 Regas at your home or work

Cars made after 2017 use a newer refrigerant called R1234yf. This costs more than the older R134a gas. Expect to pay £20–£40 more for the newer type.

How Often Should You Regas?

The general rule is every 2 years. But it depends on how you use the system.

  • Every 2 years is the standard recommendation from most manufacturers.
  • Use it regularly: Running the air con for 10 minutes a week, even in winter, keeps seals lubricated and prevents leaks.
  • Older cars: Cars over 5 years old may need regassing more often as seals wear.
  • If it still feels cold: You probably don't need a regas yet. Don't pay for one you don't need.

Can You Regas It Yourself?

DIY regas kits are available, but we don't recommend them. Here's why.

  • DIY kits can't remove old gas or check for leaks. They just top up.
  • Overfilling can damage the compressor — an expensive fix (£500+).
  • The refrigerant is a pressurised gas. Mishandling it can be dangerous.
  • If your system has a leak, topping up is a waste of money. The gas will leak out again.

A professional regas costs £40–£80. It's not worth the risk of doing it yourself and causing £500+ of damage.

Air Con Maintenance Tips

  1. Run it weekly: Use the air con for at least 10 minutes a week all year round. This keeps the system lubricated.
  2. Clean the cabin filter: A dirty cabin filter restricts airflow and makes the system work harder. Replace it every 12–18 months.
  3. Use the recirculation button wisely: Recirculation cools faster but can make the air musty. Switch between fresh and recirculated air.
  4. Open windows first: On a hot day, open the windows for 30 seconds before turning on the air con. This lets the hottest air escape.
  5. Get a full service: During your annual car service, ask the garage to check the air con system. Read our servicing guide for more.

A working air con system keeps you comfortable all year round. Get it regassed every 2 years, run it regularly, and have it checked during your annual service. It's a small cost that makes a big difference.
