Summary
- Never pour boiling water on a frozen windscreen: It can crack the glass due to thermal shock.
- Don't leave your car running unattended: It's illegal on a public road and an invitation for thieves.
- Use a proper ice scraper and de-icer spray: The safest and most effective combination.
UK winters bring frost, ice, and the daily battle to clear your windscreen before the school run. Here's how to do it properly — and the mistakes you absolutely must avoid.
What NOT to Do
Don't Use Boiling Water
The temperature difference between boiling water and frozen glass causes thermal shock. This can crack or shatter your windscreen. Even warm water can freeze again on the glass, making things worse.
Don't Leave Your Engine Running Unattended
It's a criminal offence to leave your engine running unattended on a public road under the Road Traffic Act 1988. Insurance companies may also refuse claims if your car is stolen this way — they call it "frost jacking."
Don't Use a Credit Card or CD Case
Improvised scrapers can scratch the glass. They're also ineffective and take much longer than a proper scraper.
Don't Drive with a Peephole
Clearing just a small patch on the windscreen is illegal. You must have full visibility through all windows before driving. You can be fined £60 and get 3 points for restricted vision.
How to De-Ice Your Car Properly
- Start the engine and turn on the heated windscreen (if your car has one). Set the blower to hot, aimed at the windscreen
- Spray de-icer on the windscreen and windows. Use a commercial de-icer or make your own with 3 parts vinegar to 1 part water in a spray bottle
- Use a proper ice scraper. Work from the top down, pushing ice off the glass. Don't press too hard
- Clear all windows, mirrors, and lights. Not just the windscreen — side windows, rear window, wing mirrors, headlights, and tail lights
- Clear snow from the roof. Snow on the roof can slide forward onto the windscreen when you brake, or blow off and hit the car behind
- Check your number plates are visible. Snow or ice covering your plates is an offence
Preventing Ice Build-Up
- Use a windscreen cover: A frost protector placed on the windscreen the night before stops ice forming. Costs £5-£15
- Park in a garage: If you have one, use it. Even a carport reduces frost
- Apply water-repellent treatment: Products like Rain-X reduce ice adhesion
- Use your air con: Running the AC in winter demists windows faster because it removes moisture from the air
Winter Driving Essentials
Keep these in your car during winter months:

- Torch (with working batteries)
- Phone charger
- Hi-vis vest
- Screenwash (winter formula rated to -15°C or lower)
- Jump leads or a portable jump starter
- Shovel (if you live in a rural or upland area)
