Summary
- Many laws are unexpected: You can be fined for eating, drinking coffee, or even having a dirty number plate.
- Penalties are real: Fines range from £50 to £5,000. Some offences carry penalty points too.
- Know the rules: Ignorance is no defence. If you break the law, you face the consequences.
Everyone knows the big driving laws: don't drink and drive, don't use your phone, wear your seatbelt. But there are plenty of lesser-known rules that catch drivers out.
Some of these will surprise you. Let's go through them.
Eating and Drinking While Driving
There's no specific law against eating at the wheel. But you can still be fined.
- If eating distracts you, police can charge you with driving without due care and attention.
- The fine is £100 and 3 penalty points.
- In serious cases, it can lead to a court appearance and up to £5,000 fine.
The same applies to drinking coffee, changing the radio, or anything that takes your attention off the road.
Splashing Pedestrians
Yes, deliberately driving through a puddle and soaking someone is an offence.
- It's classed as driving without reasonable consideration for other road users.
- The fine is £100 and 3 penalty points.
- If taken to court, the fine can reach £5,000.
Even if it's not deliberate, you should slow down near puddles when pedestrians are close.
Dirty or Obscured Number Plates
Your number plate must be readable at all times.
- A dirty number plate can get you a fixed penalty of up to £1,000.
- Snow, mud, and dirt are no excuse. Keep your plates clean.
- The front plate must be white and the rear must be yellow. Non-standard plates are also illegal.
Flashing Your Lights to Warn of Speed Cameras
Flashing your headlights to warn other drivers about a speed camera is illegal.
- It's classed as obstructing a police officer in the course of their duties.
- The fine can be up to £1,000.
- The Highway Code says you should only flash your headlights to let other road users know you're there.
Sleeping in Your Car
Sleeping in your car isn't illegal by itself. But be careful.
- If you're over the drink-drive limit, you can be charged with being drunk in charge of a vehicle — even if the engine is off.
- The penalty is 10 penalty points or disqualification, plus a fine of up to £2,500.
- If you need to sleep in your car after drinking, put the keys in the boot and don't sit in the driver's seat.
Using Your Phone at Traffic Lights
Your car doesn't have to be moving for it to be illegal.
- Using your phone while stopped at traffic lights, in a queue, or at a junction is still illegal.
- The penalty is £200 and 6 penalty points.
- New drivers (within first 2 years) lose their licence for a single phone offence.
Parking on the Pavement
In London, parking on the pavement is illegal everywhere. Outside London, it depends on local rules.
- In London, the fine is up to £70.
- Outside London, local councils can make their own rules. More areas are banning it.
- Even where it's allowed, blocking the pavement for wheelchairs and pushchairs is an offence.
Other Surprising Laws
- Honking your horn aggressively: Your horn should only be used to warn other road users of your presence. Using it in anger is an offence (£1,000 fine).
- Driving too slowly: Driving significantly below the speed limit without good reason can be classed as careless driving.
- Paying with your phone at a drive-through: Technically, using your phone to pay at a drive-through while the engine is running could be an offence. Turn the engine off first.
- Playing loud music: If your music is so loud it distracts you, it could be classed as driving without due care.
- Letting your dog stick its head out the window: If the dog distracts you or isn't properly restrained, you could be fined under the Highway Code.
UK driving laws are broader than most people realise. The best approach is simple: stay focused on driving, keep your car clean and legal, and think about other road users. If you're not sure about a rule, check the GOV.UK driving guide.
