Driving Abroad With Your UK Car: What You Need to Know

Summary

  • Documents are essential: Bring your driving licence, V5C, insurance certificate, and passport.
  • Equipment rules vary: Different countries require different safety equipment. Check before you go.
  • Insurance check: Your UK insurance gives basic cover in Europe. For full cover, contact your insurer. Read our post-Brexit driving guide for more.

Taking your car to France, Spain, or beyond is a brilliant way to explore Europe. But there are rules you need to follow.

Get them wrong and you face on-the-spot fines. Get them right and you'll enjoy a stress-free road trip.

Documents You Need

Pack these before you leave. You could be fined without them.

  • Full UK driving licence: Photocard licence. Some countries also want the paper counterpart.
  • V5C registration document: The original, not a photocopy. This proves you own the car.
  • Valid insurance certificate: Showing you're covered for driving abroad.
  • Passport: Needed for border crossings since Brexit.
  • International Driving Permit (IDP): Needed for some countries outside the EU. Check before you go.

Required Equipment by Country

Each country has its own requirements. Here are the most popular destinations.

Country Required Equipment
France High-vis vest (in car, not boot), warning triangle, headlamp beam deflectors, GB/UK sticker
Spain Two warning triangles, high-vis vest, spare bulb kit, GB/UK sticker
Germany Warning triangle, first aid kit, high-vis vest
Italy Warning triangle, high-vis vest, headlamp beam deflectors
Netherlands Warning triangle, high-vis vest

A European driving kit from Halfords or Amazon covers most requirements. They cost around £15–£30.

Insurance for Driving Abroad

Your UK insurance does provide some cover in Europe. But it might not be enough.

  • Since Brexit: UK car insurance automatically gives you the minimum legal cover (third party) in EU countries.
  • You don't need a Green Card for EU countries any more. This rule changed in 2024.
  • Full comprehensive cover: Contact your insurer before you go. Some include it free; others charge extra.
  • Breakdown cover: Your UK breakdown cover almost certainly won't work abroad. Buy European breakdown cover separately.

Important: If you're involved in an accident abroad with only third-party cover, your own car's damage won't be covered. It's worth paying for full cover.

Driving Rules That Differ Abroad

These catch UK drivers out every year. Know them before you go.

  • Drive on the right: Most of Europe drives on the right. It takes a few minutes to adjust.
  • Speed limits in km/h: Not mph. 130 km/h (France motorways) = 80 mph. 50 km/h (town) = 31 mph.
  • Headlamp deflectors: Your headlights are set for left-hand driving. Without deflectors, they dazzle oncoming drivers.
  • Priority from the right: In France, cars coming from the right have priority at unmarked junctions. This is a common cause of accidents for UK drivers.
  • Drink-drive limits: Most European countries have a lower alcohol limit than the UK (0.5mg compared to 0.8mg in England).

Toll Roads and Vignettes

Many European countries charge for road use. Be prepared.

  • France: Motorway tolls are paid at barriers. A cross-country trip can cost £50–£100 in tolls.
  • Switzerland: Requires a vignette (sticker) for £35. Buy it at the border.
  • Austria: Also requires a vignette. Available for 10 days, 2 months, or a year.
  • Italy: Toll motorways with payment at barriers.

Preparing Your Car

Give your car a check before a long trip abroad.

  1. Check tyre pressures and condition. You'll be covering a lot of miles. Good tyres are essential.
  2. Check oil and coolant levels. Top up before you go.
  3. Check all lights work. Replace any blown bulbs.
  4. Apply headlamp deflectors. These redirect your headlight beam for right-hand traffic.
  5. Check your MOT is valid for the duration of your trip.
  6. Pack a first aid kit, warning triangle, and high-vis vests.
