Car Boot Space Guide: How Much Do You Actually Need?

Summary

  • Average UK car boot is 350–500 litres: That's enough for weekly shopping and a couple of suitcases.
  • Families need 450+ litres: Pushchairs, bags, and car seats take up a lot of room.
  • Dog owners should look at 500+ litres: SUVs and estates give the most space. Check our best cars for dog owners guide.

We've all been there. You're at the supermarket, bags piled high, and the boot won't close. Or you're packing for a holiday and the pushchair takes up the entire boot.

Here's how to work out how much boot space you actually need.

How Boot Space Is Measured

Boot space is measured in litres. The number you see in car specs is the total volume with the rear seats up.

  • Below 300 litres: Small cars (city cars, small hatchbacks). Tight for anything beyond a few shopping bags.
  • 300–450 litres: Medium cars (hatchbacks, small SUVs). Good for everyday use.
  • 450–600 litres: Large cars (family SUVs, saloons). Comfortable for families.
  • 600+ litres: Estates, large SUVs. Best for big families, dog owners, and frequent road trips.

What Actually Fits

  • 200–300 litres: A couple of shopping bags, a small suitcase
  • 300–400 litres: Weekly shop, or one large suitcase and hand luggage
  • 400–500 litres: Pushchair plus shopping bags, or 2–3 suitcases
  • 500–600 litres: Large pushchair, changing bag, plus shopping
  • 600+ litres: Everything above plus dog crate, sports equipment, or multiple suitcases

Boot Shape Matters Too

Litres don't tell the whole story. The shape of the boot matters just as much:

  • Square boots are most practical: Estates and box-shaped SUVs use space most efficiently.
  • Sloping tailgates waste space: Coupes and fastbacks look great but the boot isn't as usable.
  • Boot lip height: A low boot lip makes loading heavy items much easier.
  • Under-floor storage: Some cars have a deep well under the boot floor. Great for hiding valuables.

Tips Before Buying

  1. Take your pushchair or dog crate to the dealer and try it in the boot.
  2. Check boot space with the rear seats up AND folded down.
  3. Consider what you carry weekly, not just for holidays.
  4. Run a car history check before buying any used car.
