Good site and very helpful. I found what I needed and will recommend the site to friends.

Very good and easy too use as a company

Car Owl gave an instant report to me flagging an issue with the car I was about to buy. This helped me take the right decision.

Gave me all the information I needed in one place.

Easy to use service that presented data in a clear and easy to consume way. Would happily use again and recommend to others.

Great service for instant and clear reports on a car with way more details than expected. Definitely recommended.

A clear and precise report.

My second time using car owl , and certainly didn’t disappoint, they guys really do take out all the hard work, great effective services highly recommend

Brilliant tool that helped me feel confident about buying a used car. I was able to check out the history of the vehicle before seeing it, to ensure I knew the info given was correct, and check it had no hidden issues. The fact that the check goes deep enough to show previous number plates that have been on a vehicle and at what time etc just shows the quality. Once I was with the car and happy I wanted to proceed, I was able to enter the vin number onto the report and it confirmed that it was in fact the correct car. Hoping not to buy a car any time soon but will definitely use again when I do.

Found a car I really liked online and was about to put down a deposit, but thought I’d run a quick Car Owl check first just to be sure. Turned out the mileage had been tampered with and it had failed multiple inspections in the past. The ad made it look spotless. Honestly can’t believe how much info the report showed. Would’ve never known otherwise. Car Owl probably saved me thousands. Honestly, don’t skip it

Revealed the car was still on finance. Without Car Owl I would have been stuck paying off someone else's loan. Highly recommend

Good site and very helpful. I found what I needed and will recommend the site to my friends and colleagues.

Professional & faultless service. Does exactly what it says on the tin. Would definitely recommend anyone to use Car Owl services!

Very good very quick and on the ball report

Motorcycle vin with only 7 characters was causing issues with background checks and correct registration. This was the only company that provided the correct information. Recommended

Got all the information on my car. for a good price

I used this to find the registration for a project car that I bought with no documentation so I could send off a v62… old vin so most places couldn’t help. But this came straight back with all of the relevant information 👌

Stopped be buying a potential stolen vehicle. So well worth the cost of getting it checked

First rate (indeed- unbelievable- instant) response to emails. Brilliant Customer Service- RATE for this day and era. Their Customer Service demonstrates that Big Firms CAN have a personal relationship with their Inquirers. Brilliant Customer Service. Simply outstanding. Ad multos annos to all at Car Owl.

Really worth paying for this detailed background check. Gave me sufficient information to make a better informed decision and after the checks were done we decided not to buy the vehicle. Money well spent!

Really pleased with the app. Actually found some information that I have been trying to find for a while.

Very good service

Good found out what I needed

Understanding BHP and Vehicle Performance

BHP (brake horsepower) is one of the most important specifications when evaluating a car's performance. Here's what you need to know about horsepower figures and how they affect your vehicle.

What Does BHP Actually Mean?

BHP stands for Brake Horsepower—a measurement of an engine's power output before any losses from the gearbox, alternator, or other components. It's called 'brake' horsepower because it was originally measured using a brake mechanism to apply resistance to the engine. The higher the BHP, the more powerful the engine. Most family cars have between 100-200 BHP, while performance cars can exceed 500 BHP.

What's the Difference Between BHP and PS?

BHP (Brake Horsepower) and PS (Pferdestärke, German for horsepower) measure the same thing but use different calculation methods. 1 BHP equals approximately 1.014 PS, so the numbers are nearly identical. UK manufacturers traditionally used BHP, while European brands often quote PS. Our vehicle reports show both figures for easy comparison.

How Does BHP Affect Insurance Premiums?

Insurance companies consider BHP when calculating premiums because higher-powered cars are statistically more likely to be involved in accidents. A car with higher BHP typically costs more to insure, especially for younger drivers. Knowing your exact BHP figure helps you get accurate insurance quotes and compare vehicles in similar power brackets.

Frequently Asked Questions About BHP Checks

What is BHP?

BHP stands for Brake Horsepower—a measurement of an engine's power output. It indicates how much power the engine produces before any losses from the transmission and drivetrain.

How do I check my car's BHP?

Enter your registration number into our checker above. You'll get access to your vehicle's brake horsepower and engine specifications in our Basic or Full vehicle reports.

Is BHP included in the vehicle reports?

Yes, BHP and full engine specifications are included in both our Basic Vehicle Report and Full Vehicle History Report.

What's the difference between BHP and HP?

BHP (Brake Horsepower) is measured at the engine before drivetrain losses. HP (Horsepower) can refer to either brake horsepower or wheel horsepower, which is lower due to power lost through the transmission.

Why do insurance companies ask for BHP?

Insurance companies use BHP to assess risk. Higher-powered vehicles are statistically more likely to be involved in accidents, so they typically cost more to insure.

How accurate is the BHP check?

Our BHP figures come from official vehicle registration data. They represent the manufacturer's stated power output for your specific vehicle variant.

Can modified cars show different BHP?

Our reports show the standard manufacturer specification. If a car has been modified (remapped, tuned, or had engine upgrades), the actual BHP may be different from the registered figure.

What BHP is considered powerful?

For family cars, 100-150 BHP is typical. Cars with 200-300 BHP are considered sporty, while anything over 400 BHP is high-performance territory.

Does BHP affect fuel consumption?

Higher BHP engines can consume more fuel, especially when driven hard. However, modern efficient engines can produce good power while maintaining reasonable fuel economy.

Can I check BHP with a VIN number?

Yes, our tool works with both UK registration numbers and VIN numbers. Both provide access to engine specifications including BHP.
